Tarrant County women divorced
Every year, thousands of couples throughout the country go through the divorce process. While there are challenges along the way, they most often pertain to the division of assets, child custody, and other similar matters.
For two Tarrant County women, the legal system got in the way of their divorce. However, after nearly two years of waiting, the women were finally able to end their marriage. This was the county’s first gay divorce.
In 2010, the couple tied the knot in New Hampshire. However, four years later, one of the women filed for divorce while the other requested that Texas act as if they were never married.
After both options were shut down, the women took their case to the 2nd Court of Appeals in Fort Worth.
One of the women said, “It was a feeling, initially, of being invisible. There was no resolution. But I always had faith in the legal system that this day would come.”
The appeals court eventually sent the case back to where it started, at which time the judge granted the women a divorce.
People have been getting divorced in the United States for many years. However, same-sex divorces are not nearly as common. For this reason, the legal system does not always know which steps to take or how to best deal with the situation. This can lead to a long, drawn out process.
When a marriage fails, it may be time to consider the divorce process. When it comes to a same-sex marriage, there are many questions to answer and challenges to address. In the end, what matters most is that the couple finds a resolution.
